The poem remained unfinished; published in 1816 along with another unfinished poem of the early period, "Christabel". It was translated into Russian by Konstantin Balmont.
Coleridge accompanied the first publication with a preface, where he said that the poem came to him in a dream, after taking opium and reading a volume by Samuel Purchase with notes by Marco Polo about life at the court of the Mongolian Khan Kubilai in Khanbalyk.
