The most famous sight of Moscow is the Red Square. It amazes with its grandiosity and splendour. The Cathedral of Saint Bassil the Blessed is one of the most beautiful works of architecture in the square.
The Bolshoy Theatre, the Tretyakovskaya Gallery and many other places are also unforgettable!
The most popular means of transport is Moscow Metro.
It amazes with its size. It is one of the biggest metros in the world.
Every day 9915 trains run over 12 lines of the system
(225 stations) with the minimum headway of 90 seconds.
Moscow Metro is the world's second most heavily used transit system.
It was opened in 1935.
It is famous for its original design of many of its stations.
The first plans for a transit system in Moscow date back in the times of the Russian Empire.
But they were postponed by World War I, the October Revolution and the Russian Civil War.
In June 1931 the decision to start the construction of Moscow Metro was taken by the Central Committee of the USSR Communist Party.
Lazar Kaganovich designed a plan and the Metro was named after him ("Metropoliten im. L.M. Kaganovicha“ until 1955).
First stage
The first line was opened to public on May 15, 1935 at 7am.
The line was 11 km long, and included 13 stations.
It connected Sokolniki to Park Kultury. Later a new station Kiyevskaya was opened in March 1937.
The construction of the first stations was based on other underground systems, and only a few original designs were allowed: (Krasniye Vorota, Okhotniy Ryad and Kropotkinskaya). Kiyevskaya station was the first to use national motifs.
It fascinates with its beauty. That’s why people call it «The Underground Palace».
The old stations are real works of art with mosaics, sculptures and paintings on the walls, with statues and chandeliers.
