SAINT- PETERSBURG

St. Petersburg is my home town. It is one of the largest industrial and cultural centres and one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It was founded in 1703 by Peter I and for over 200 years (from 1714 till 1917) was the capital of Russia.

The city began with the Peter and Paul Fortress, The Peter and Paul Cathedral, the first church of the city, is worth seeing: it is an outstanding architectural monument. St. Petersburg is famous for its architecture. There are many fine building, beautiful monuments, rich museums, parks and gardens in the city. The monument to Peter I (Bronze Horseman),  the Hermitage, the Summer Gardens – all of them have a world-wine fame.

It is situated on 42 islands. The river Neva runs through the city. It runs from the lake of Ladoga into the Baltik Sea. At night the bridges are raised over the Neva. In May and June, the sun shines very late in the evening. People call these nights the White Nights.

History of the Peter and Paul Fortress
The Peter and Paul Fortress was built as a defensive structure. After the victory over the Swedes in the Northern War, it became necessary to build a fort in order to protect the conquered lands. The fortress, designed on the draft of Peter I, was laid on the day of the Holy Trinity - May 27, 1703 It became an important link in the chain of fortifications of the Neva and the Gulf of Finland.

History of the Hermitage
Its history begins in 1754, when the construction of the Winter Palace began. The architect Rastrelli worked on it. Then Catherine the Great reigned. With her help the Small and Big Hermitage and the Hermitage Theater appeared. Their filling began in 1764, when Gotskovsky (a merchant) gave 225 paintings instead of debt.

History of the Summer Garden
The Summer Garden is in St. Petersburg, the oldest palace and park ensemble in the city. Established in 1704 near the summer wooden residence of Emperor Peter I (1703) on the bank of the Neva, on a small island formed by the Moyka and Fontanka Rivers and the artificial Lebyazhy Canal (dug in 1716).

The Bronze Horseman monument, the main symbol of Northern Palmyra, immortalizing Peter the Great on a rampant horse, was unveiled on August 7, 1782.

History of the Alexander Column
On September 10 (August 30, Old Style) 1834 in St. Petersburg on Palace Square in memory of the victory over Napoleon was Alexander's column. Alexander's Column is a monument to the victory of the Russian people in the Patriotic War of 1812 on Palace Square in St. Petersburg.

History of St. Isaac's Cathedral
St. Isaac's Cathedral is the most famous and majestic temple in St. Petersburg, a monument of late classicist architecture, and before the October Revolution the main temple in St. Petersburg. It was founded in honor of Peter I and named after St. Isaac of Dalmatia, whose day (May 30 of the old style) coincides with the birth date of Peter I. It was built in 1818-58, designed by A. A. Monferrand, augmented by other Russian architects (V. P. Stasov and others)
