New Year
New Year’s Day is celebrated on the 1st of January, but Americans begin celebrating it on the 31st of December. There is a big celebration in Times Square in New York City on this day. On January 1 Americans visit friends, relatives and neighbours. There are parties and a lot of food. People watch television together and write New Year’s resolutions.
Martin Luther King Day
Martin Luther King Day is celebrated on the third Monday in January. Martin Luther King was a minister who fought against racial discrimination. He said that a person’s character is more important than the color of his skin. In this day many Americans go to church or participate in public ceremonies.
President's Day
On the third Monday in February Americans celebrate President's Day. This holiday honors two greatest president, George Washington and Abram Lincoln, also sixteenth president. Both presidents are famous for their honesty.
Memorial Day
Memorial Day is on the last Monday of May. This day is dedicated to the memory of American soldiers killed in all wars and armed conflicts in which the U.S.A has ever participated.
Independence
Day
Independence Day is one of the most important holidays in America. It is celebrated on the 4ts of July. On this day in 1776 The Declaration of independence was signed in Philadelphia.
Columbus
Day
Christopher Columbus discovered America on October 12,1492. At that time, many people in Europe thought that the world was flat and that if a ship sailed to the edge of the world, it would fall off! But Columbus believed the world was made the journey to America.
Thanksgiving Day
Americans celebrate Thanksgiving Day on the fourth Thursday in November. This is a family holiday. At Thanksgiving American families gather to give thanks for all the good things in our lives. Traditional Thanksgiving food is roast turkey, pumpkin pies, cranberry jelly, ham, sweet potatoes.
Christmas
Christmas is a religious holiday celebrated on the 25th of December. On this day Americans celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Christmas is considered to be a family celebration and every person must come back home on this day. Americans put up a Christmas tree and decorate it with toys an sweets. Americans prepare special food and cookies.
Halloween
Halloween is a holiday celebrated mostly by children and the young. On the 31st of October they dress as vampires, witches and ghosts and go from house to house saying trick or treat. Popular decoration is Jack-o-lanterns. Jack-o-lanterns are pumpkins people carve to look like faces.
