Basic first aid
Basic first aid is being able to help someone who has a sudden injury or illness, such as treatment to burns, cuts, insect bites or bleeding nose.
First of all it’s important to stay calm and not panic. You need to think and assess the situation. If there’s something serious call emergency services!
The first aid kit
The first aid kits contain the most needed equipment to treat minor injuries, e.g. a bandage, a medical patch, antibacterial wet wipes, cotton balls, chlorohexidine, Betadine and Panthenol. You should have the first aid kit box at home, in cars, at school or in your classroom. Also you can have a small box with you all the time in case of some minor injuries.
Burns
There are many types of burns, e.g. thermal or heat, chemical, electrical or sun. There are three classifications of burns. 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree. 1st degree burns only damage the top layer of skin. The area can be a little red and swelling. Put some ice or cold water on the area of burns. After some minutes dry the area and apply some wound healing cream, e.g. panthenol. 2nd and 3rd degrees burns are more serious and it’s better to contact the doctor or call the ambulance.
Bee stings or bug bites
Most insects’ stings can be mild, causing minor pain, itching, redness or swelling. Also, mosquito bites can carry some virus. Never try to pinch the area where a stinger is present, as it further irritates the bite. When the stinger is out, wash the area with soap and water and apply a cool compress using ice, cold water, and a clean towel.
This will help reduce pain. If the sting is on an arm or a leg, try to rise it to help with the pain. If you are at home, apply some calamine lotion or even baking soda paste. Taking an antihistamine may also help reduce the itching. You should call doctor if you have difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips, eyelids or throat.
Nosebleed
As a result, any sort of trauma to the face can cause a nosebleed. It’s recommended to sit first and tilt your head slightly forward. Do not tilt your head back, it will make blood to run back into throat. Use your fingers to press below the bridge of the nose for 7-10 minutes. Putting some cold or ice also may help to stop the bleeding. After 10 min check to see if the bleeding has stopped.
