Wales - "land of friends"
Wales is a picturesque country, most of whose territory is occupied by mountains. In the Welsh language its name is pronounced Cymru. Loosely translated, it means "country of friends. The Welsh are an enigmatic and controversial people. They are fond of family values, adore rugby and pay a lot of attention to creativity.

Welsh language
The first thing that surprises those unfamiliar with the characteristics of Wales is their language. Despite the fact that the country is part of the United Kingdom, at least 20% of the inhabitants continue to speak their ancient dialect. Welsh is deservedly considered one of the oldest European languages and in the cities of Wales you will often find signs and posters duplicated in it. In spite of everything, over time, English is gradually replacing Welsh and today many activists are working to bring the old traditions back to life, without forgetting the modern culture as well.

Houses of Wales
Houses in Wales are not what we are used to seeing. They are more like medieval houses of stone and thatched roofs, but there are more modern ones. There are many palaces there, as well as houses located on mountain sites.

National Cuisine of Wales
The area of Wales, mostly flat, is occupied by pasture and arable land. The Welsh (which is how the people of Wales are called) are mainly engaged in raising sheep, as well as pigs and cows, obtaining meat and milk. Of the cereal crops, oats are the most popular.
It is these products that are used to prepare the national dish "cawl", which is a thick meat soup. Traditionally it was cooked over an open fire in an iron cauldron. The recipe for this soup varied according to the region and the seasons, depending on what products were available.
Dairy products are widely used in Welsh cuisine. There is milk itself, cream, butter, buttermilk and many home cheeses, the pride of Wales.
Welsh people are great masters and lovers of baking.

The Seven Wonders of Wales
These are the "signature" sights of Wales, arranged so that you can see them all in a day or two. The humorous quatrain listing them was written, presumably in the late 18th or early 19th century, by an English traveller. One could certainly argue with his choice, but all these sights are so beloved by locals and travelers that they have become traditional symbols.
Here's this quatrain:
Pistyll Rhaeadr and Wrexham steeple,
Snowdon's mountain without its people,
Overton yew trees, St. Winefride wells,
Llangollen bridge and Gresford bells.

Legends of Wales
We must mention Devil's Bridge, so named because of the story in which a cunning old lady tricked the devil as she walked across this ancient bridge. Like any self-respecting and wayfaring devil's bridge, it consists of as many as three bridges built on top of each other. The bottom two are stone, the top one is iron. People have been walking on the Devil's Bridge since 1200, and it is bridged over the Minak River at the point where it empties into the Reidol River. That is, the bridge stands over the waterfall with a height of 90 meters. Hence the legend that Satan himself was the foreman of the construction. The evil one demanded the soul of the first mortal to cross the new bridge. The local dog-woman outsmarted the devil by letting one of her dogs go first.

In the Footsteps of King Arthur
At Llyn Dinas, King Arthur's knight named Iwaine fought a giant on the shore of a lake. At Llyn Barfog, it is said, lived a monster that King Arthur slayed with his chain. Legend has it that Arthur slew another giant called Ritta on Mount Snowdon. And the so-called "Pass of Arrows" (Bwlch y Saethau) is the site of King Arthur's fierce battle with his enemies. Legend has it that King Arthur's treasure is hidden at Marchlyn Mawr near Llanberis. If you continue eastwards you'll reach Rithyn where Arthur avenged his wounded enemy called Huil. King Arthur beheaded him on a boulder, which is now in Peter's Square in Ritin.

Legend of the Dragons
So Merlin, the court sorcerer of King Arthur of Celtic, predicted the battle of the red and white dragons. Which is exactly what happened. The white dragon of the Saxons and the red dragon of the Welsh (another version of the Celts) fought each for his tribe. Both were strong and both were wounded. Their moans were so strong that they destroyed crops, killed livestock and allowed women to give birth prematurely. And then King Llud of Britain realized that this could not go on and asked for help from his cousin Llefelis, who told him to dig a huge hole in the middle of the kingdom and fill it with a sedative potion. Llud did so. The dragons drank the potion, and fell asleep in the same pit. Llud covered them with a magic cloth and captivated them.
