Biography
Pavel Stepanovich Nakhimov - an outstanding naval commander, had the rank of full admiral, hero of Sevastopol. Great victories of the Russian Navy are associated with the name of Admiral Pavel Nakhimov.
Nakhimov is a hero of the Sevastopol defense, the famous Sinop battle (during which the entire Turkish squadron was defeated in a matter of hours (went down in history as the last major battle of sailing fleets) and the Crimean War. Pavel Nakhimov was born on June 23 (July 5), 1802 in the Smolensk region, in the small village of Gorodok - in the Vyazemsky district.
Today, a memorial sign has been erected in its place, and the house-museum, which preserves the family life of the Nakhimov family, is located nearby - in the Khmelita estate.
The noble family of the Nakhimovs traces its origins to Timofey Nakhimov, the centurion of the Akhtyrsky Cossack regiment, to whom the future admiral was a great-great-grandson. Nakhimov was from a large family of hereditary naval commanders, all of the five sons became sailors.
In 1818 Pavel graduated from the Naval Corps. Later he circumnavigated the world under the command of M.P. Lazarev. In 1827 he distinguished himself in the battle of Navarino. In 1828-1830, commanding a corvette, he sailed in the Mediterranean as part of a Russian squadron. In 1834 he was transferred to the Black Sea Fleet as commander of the battleship Silistria.
During the Crimean War, he successfully defeated the Turks in the battle of Sinop.
After the death of Admiral V.A., Kornilov led the legendary Sevastopol defense in 1854-1855. In order to block the enemy's breakthrough into the Sevastopol harbor, he ordered to flood 5 battleships, naval guns and crews - to defend the city. The steadfastness and courage of Russian soldiers, sailors and residents of the city, holding back the enemy under the command of Nakhimov, shocked the whole world.
Comrade Nakhimov Eduard Ivanovich Totleben wrote about the admiral:
“Nakhimov walked around the defensive line every day, despising all the dangers. By his presence and example, he uplifted the spirit not only in the sailors who revered him, but also in the ground forces, who also soon realized what Nakhimov was. Always caring about saving people's lives, the admiral did not spare only himself. So, for example, during the entire siege, he alone always wore epaulettes, doing this in order to convey contempt for the danger to all his regiments.
In June 1855, during a detour of the advanced fortifications, he was mortally wounded by a bullet in the head on Malakhov Hill, and soon died.
On his last journey, the admiral was seen off not only by the garrison of Sevastopol. The French stopped bombarding the fortress, and the British lowered their flags on their ships as a sign of respect.
He was buried in the crypt of the Vladimir Cathedral in Sevastopol.
